Imagine…
A few minutes before 10 p.m. on the eve of our wedding, I got a call from our cake supplier. We decided to get our wedding cake from a local bakeshop, Sweet Secrets Babycakes, that has a branch at a mall that’s very accessible to us. The caller was Che, the nice girl manning their branch at the Festival Mall, in Alabang. She was asking if it’s ok to pick up the cake at their Sta. Rosa, Laguna branch. (We have to pick up the cake because they don’t offer delivery). I told her it will be more inconvenient for us because our reception is farther from Sta. Rosa than from Alabang. I also asked her what’s wrong.
“No one will assist our delivery man tomorrow and the baker is afraid at if he travels with the cake alone, one of the layers might topple down.
Imagine my horror…
That’s unacceptable, I told her. Even if we managed to pick the cake from their Sta. Rosa branch, what guarantee do we have that it will stay up and in one piece while in transit to our venue, which is in Carmona, Cavite.
It helped that Che was so nice and she sounded really worried about this whole situation. I asked her if it’s possible to deliver the cake in separate layers and just have someone to assemble it at the venue. And of course, we’ll just pay extra. She told me they don’t offer such service and the only way is to pick it up in either one of their branches. I stressed that Sta. Rosa is too far, which is true, and that I prefer– no I insist– to pick up the cake in Alabang because that’s what we previously agreed upon. Being a nice girl that she is, our conversation ended with her assurance that they’ll do everything so an upright 3-tier wedding cake will be ready by tomorrow at 10 a.m. (as soon as the mall opens).
So I slept over the issue because I trusted her sincerity.
But came the next day, an hour before our agreed pick up time, Che sent me a text message asking if it’s okay to pick up the cake by 11 a.m. instead because something happened. The cake was delivered at their Alabang branch in one piece, however the top layer tipped over and they have to fix it first.
I wasn’t sure if I’d be angry but I was sure I don’t want to stress myself over that cake. So I didn’t reply. As if on cue, our coordinator, Ms. Anne, came inside my room to check up on me and I showed her the text message. She said she’ll deal with it. She’s a nice person too and in my book, most nice people are sincere.
By 11 a.m. I got another text message again and this time Che was telling that the cake is ready for pick-up. About the same time, Ms. Anne came by the room also to tell me the same thing. So I asked my uncle to proceed to Festival Mall.
After more than two hours (normal travel time from Alabang to our venue is just 15 minutes), my cake finally arrived and I saw how my uncle was literally inching his steps from the car to the reception area just to make sure that the cake stays up. I could see that it’s already slightly lopsided. Nonetheless, it still looked okay (even perfect) and stayed looking that way until after the reception was over.
All’s well in the end.
But why it took them more than two hours? Because my uncle had to drive at 60 kph with the hazard lights on to ensure that the cake won’t fall apart. My aunt and brother, who were with him, had to tilt the cake to align it to the road because the way to our venue was an uphill. My aunt also had to support the top layer with her finger, otherwise it will topple down. And not to mention that my brother had to carry the cake from the 3rd floor to the ground parking lot of the mall in very, very careful and small steps.
So why a one-less than a perfect feedback score for all these troubles? Because:
- The cake was a 3-tiered ALL-EDIBLE cake with 12″x5″, 8″x5″, 6″x5″ dimensions in boiled icing.
- It came in three different flavors, one for each layer: Moist Chocolate (base), Dulce de Leche (middle), and Caramel (top).
- It has a customized design. We provided them with a picture of the design that we want (with slight modifications) and they were able to copy it.
- The cake itself was not your average spongecake. It was actually quite delicious, especially the Dulce de Leche layer that is a cross between a very soft spongecake and a Leche Flan.
- They gave us an extra 6″x5″ cutting cake (it was meant to be a spare in case the top fell off).
- It costed us only P3,600.
- Che called me up again after the wedding and asked if the cake was able to hold itself up. She said she was worried that our wedding reception might be ruined because of the cake. I told her the cake was perfect and thanked her for her concern.
I like nice people. Especially when they are sincere.
I’d definitely order from them again. The Dulce de Leche is worth coming back to. But maybe we’ll stick to 1 to 2 layers for now, until they have their own delivery service.
Here’s our perfect lopsided wedding cake and our Kenshin-Kauro caketopper:
