This is about us.
Sometime in the year 1978.
He was given the name Gerry. But on the day of his christening, his parents decided to name all their children with names starting with the letter D. So he was baptized as D and carried the name eversince.
Fast forward to some twenty years later.
She was buying herself and her mom pendants for their silver chains. She saw the stone-encrusted letter pendants and decided on it. She bought the letter S because her name is Sheng and D because her mother’s name is Delia. But occasionally, she would wear both pendants together and people would ask her “What’s with the letter D?” (because S obviously stands for her name) Her answer: “It’s the name of my soulmate.”
The name game.
Someone had a hand in creating their destiny. Someone who whispered to his mother’s ear to give him a name that starts with the letter D despite having just named him with something else. Someone who inspired her to wear both letters on her neck so that when people would ask, she can say, albeit jokingly, that her soulmate’s name starts with the letter D.
And the name game didn’t end there.
In a chatroom. The nickname was Shinta. It sounds Anime-ish. Because it is. It was taken from her favorite Anime character. He didn’t recognize it at first, but he knew there’s something about her nickname. Maybe because he loves Anime, too. So he buzzed her.
But it wasn’t just the names that bind them.
There was so much more. The love for arts and design. For movies and their critical discussions after. For spectacular phenomena like the Aurora Borealis, the Pyramids, the Circle Crops and historical documentaries ( from National Geographic, The Discovery, Animal Planet and BBC). For childhood years and their memories. The list went on and on as they discovered each other. And with each discovery, the love grew deeper and richer and sweeter.
The thought of marriage hovered over them like seagulls hovering over the waves. Waiting for the right time…
It was expected. They’ve been inseparable since. And it’s only proper to legalize the union. Although in her opinion, it didn’t really matter. They’re together, nothing else mattered. He thought otherwise. His circumstances were difficult at that time but he’s bent on giving her something special – a wedding.
“Whatever happens, we’ll get married before 2009 ends.”
“A civil wedding is fine with me.”
“No, we’ll have a church wedding. You deserve nothing less.”
And the same hand that touched their destiny, blessed his promise. It shall be done.
